Katana in Shirasaya (NBTHK Hozon Paper)
Signature : Higo Jyu Enjyu Akihiro.
(We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijyo saku, Jyojyo saku Jyo saku and regular saki)
This sword belongs to Jyojyo saku ranking.
The blade was polished by good polisher.
Habaki : Silver double habaki.
Blade length : 77.9 cm or 30.6 inches.
Sori : 1.4 cm or 0.55 inches.
Mekugi : 1
Width at the hamachi : 3.21 cm or 1.26 inches.
Width at the Kissaki : 2.18 cm or 0.85 inches.
Kasane : 0.75 cm or 0.29 inches.
Era : Late Edo period.
Shape : The blade is long(78 cm) and wide and thick with nice sori and also long kissaki healthy gorgeous shape.
Jitetsu : Itame had and mokume had mixed with Masanagare and chikei work along with Masame had.
Hamon : Niedeki kogunome midair wild feeling. Bo-shi is noter round shape.
Special feature : Higo Do-Tanuki school started at kyusyu Kikuchi province from Muromachi Eiroku era and continued to late Edo period.
The reason why this school has well known sword maker is that the Do-tanuki is Kiyomasa's personal sword smith.
Dotanuki school's most important intention is making cut well strong sword.
Therefor Do-tanuki swords looks simple and seedy appearance but cut well sword.
So sword collectors are not pay attention for these Do tanuki school.
But at meiji 19th Emperor Meiji royal visit to Toyo Kojimachi area and the game Tameshigiri
cutting test for Kabuto watched by Emperor Meiji.
The sword was used by many swords and one sword Do-Tanuki succeeded to cut the Kabuto.
From that period Dotanuki became high reputation and also used by movies Kozure ookami.
Hissatsu shigotonin, and 3 bike ga kiru. Even right now Dotanuki has welcomed for sword collectors.
It is very hard to make Do-tanuki school jignae but descendant of this school Akihiro succeeded to make the Jigane.
Probably he used old iron metal mixed up with regular Tamahagane.
I feel the evidence of his effort from the texture of the blade.
I think it will be very hard to obtain like this Do-Tanuki.
