Katana: Manji Kongou Sai Masatsugu

Katana in Shirasaya

Signature : Manji(buddhist cross pattern) Kongou Sai Masatsugu

(We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijyo saku, Jyojyo saku
Jyo saku and regular saki)This sword belongs to Jyo saku ranking.
The blade was polished.
Habaki : Gold foiled double habaki.
Blade length : 63.5 cm or 25 inches.
Sori : 1.0 cm or 0.39 inches.
Mekugi :  1
Width at the hamachi :cm 2.95 or 1.16 inches.
Width at the Kissaki : 2.06 cm or 0.81 inches.
Kasane : 0.69 cm or 0.27 inches.
Era : Showa
Shape : Regular size with rather deep Sori Katana.
Jitetsu: Ko-Itame Hada well grained with Jinie attach. It is clear jigane.
Hamon: Nioi Deki, Gunome Midare and Choji Midare mix. Boshi is Midarekomi style.

Special feature : Kongou Sai Masatsugu was born in 1867.
He studied under the 2nd generation Munetsugu.
He is known as swordsmith which deriving from Tairyusai Sokan.
He made many swords and engraved with "Kongo Sai" at Kongo-Dojo of Mt. Fuji.
His swords looks like Mumetsugu. He lived and made swords from late Edo period to Showa period.
It is rare that Manji(buddhist cross pattern) is engraved on the tang.
His style is Nioi Deki, Suguha and Gunome Midaere Hamon with Ashi.
He became a master of Sumitani Seiho. He passed away at age of 83 on Nobemver 16th, 1950.
The ranking of modern swordsmith of 1942, he was designated as a Saijo Owazamono.
This blade is a masterpiece and suggestive of Koyama Mumetsugu.

This blade was recorded in “Sumitani Seiho” exhibition catalog.
