Katana: Mumei attributed as Nio

Katana in Shirasaya (NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper)
Signature : Mumei attributed as Nio

(We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijo saku, Jojo saku Jo saku and regular saku)
This sword Mumei attributed as Nio belongs to Jojo ranking.

The blade is polished by high ranking polisher.
Habaki : Gold foiled double Habaki.
Blade length : 70.3 cm cm or 27.7 inches.
Sori : 2.0 cm or 0.79 inches.
Mekugi :  2
Width at the hamachi : 2.89 cm or 1.14 inches.
Width at the Kissaki : 1.96 cm or 0.77 inches.
Kasane : 0.58 cm or 0.23 inches.
Era : Late Kamakura period.
Shape : The blade is Oosuriage Mumei (cut shortened).
Blade is regular width and thickness with deep Sori and regular Kissaki elegant shape.
Jigane : Koitame-hada and Komokume-hada mixed with Jinie attach with Chikei.
Wonderful well grained texture.
Shinogi-ji: The texture is as same as Jigane which consist of Koitame hada and Komokume hada mixed.
Hamon : Koniedeki Suguha with Nezumiashi and small Choji-ashi scatter soft feeling.
Special feature : The founder of the Nio school is called Kiyotsuna.
When fire breaks out the temple in Kizaki village, Kiyotsuna salvaged Nio statue from the flames using blade forged by himself to cutting off the chain. From this episode, the school called themselves 'Nio'.
This school engraved the word 'Kiyo' on the top of their signature.
This stream started from Kamakura to Nanbokucho period and continued to Edo period.
This school are well known for good Jigane (texture) and also Suguha Hamon with small Ashi and round style Boshi.
This sword is good quality fine Jigane and elegant shape and also nice Suguha Hamon with small Ashi.
Shinogiji is very healthy, Jigane is as same as surface Jigane which is typical Kamakura sword making method and enjoy the feeling of the Kamakura era.

Koshirae :
Saya : On the black Roiro Saya, clam shells are embed round shape.
Tsuba : Some design are engraved open work on round shape iron Tsuba.
Menuki : Rabbit and a wave, motifed from legend 'Hare of Inaba' is engraved by shakudo plate.
Fuchi-kashira : Wave engraved on Fuchi, Kashira is made from iron.
