Tanto in Shirasaya(Bijutsu Token Kurabu estimation paper)

Signature : Gassan Saku
(We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijyo saku, Jyojyo saku
Jyo saku and regular saku)
This Gassan belongs to Jo saku ranking.
The blade was polished.
Blade length : 18.7 cm or 7.36 inches.
Sori : 0.0 cm or 0 inches.
Mekugi : 2
Width at the hamachi : 1.58 cm or 0.62 inches.
Kasane : 0.47 cm or 0.18 inches.
Era : Muromachi period. around Meio era.
Shape : Small Tanto with long Nakago. The shape is middle Muromachi style.
Jitetsu : Ayasugi Hada well grained with Jinie attach. There are Chikei.
Hamon : Suguha Deki. Boshi is round shape.

Special feature : ssan is the name of one of a holy mountain in present Yamagata pref.
where had been prospered gathering ascetics, merchants and swordsmiths from ancient times.
Swordsmiths lived at the base of Mt. Gassan formed a school and forged swords with peculiar texture
of jitetsu called Ayasugi-hada around the Kamakura period. On and after the middle Muromachi period,
swordsmiths started to inscribe their individual swordsmith name on the sword tang.
The school once declined in the Edo period. Gassan Sadayoshi moved to Osaka and revived
the tradition in the last Edo period. It has succeeded continuously until today.
