Wakizashi in Shirasaya with Koshirae (Katana : NBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho Paper)

The blade was polished.
Habaki : Silver double foiled habaki
Blade length : 53.8 cm or 21.18 inches.
Sori : 1.4 cm or 0.55 inches.
Mekugi : 1
Width at the hamachi : 3.01 cm or 1.19 inches.
Width at the Kissaki : 2.22 cm or 0.87 inches.
Kasane : 0.58 cm or 0.23 inches.
Era : Late Muromachi period.
Shape : It is O-suriage mume iwith width and thickness. It is long boshi nice shape wakizashi.
Jitetsu : Itame hada well grained with mixture of mokume hada.
Hamon : Nie Deki suguha with Nezumi ashi attached. Boushi is round end.

Special feature : Kai MIhara is a descendant of Bingo Suemihara school.
The founder is Masakiyo from Jyouwa period (1345).
Sword smith such as Masazane, Masamori, Masayoshi and Masahisa were successful during Bunki(1501)-Tensho(1573).
There are many swords with signature 貝-Kai- engraved on the top. There are many short size pieces.
The structure reminds of Mihara of Aoe piece.
This sword is wide and thick for a Kai Mihara sword.
The sword shows well the various characteristics of late Muromachi period sword such as suguha structure and Nezumiashi.

Koshirae :
Tsuba : On the iron tsuba, the rim is covered by syakudo plate.
Fuchikashira : On Yamagane plate, Kamon and rinceau pattern are engraved.
Saya : On the black roiro saya, sea birds are inlayed with Shellfish.
Menuki : Iron plate, Shishi-dog is engraved with gold color.
Kozuka : On Shakudou plate, the design of monkey pulling the horse with rope is engraved with gold color.
Kogatana : On Shakudou plate, the design of monkey pulling the horse with rope is engraved with gold color.
